Practice Guidelines

Practice Guidelines and Etiquette

  • Please maintain silence as you enter and exit the Mysore classroom so as to minimize disturbance to other practitioners. This includes placing the yoga mat gently rather than slamming it down or the use of mobile phones. Of course there will be some communication between the teacher and the students to help give instructions or answer questions but this will be done as quietly as possible.
  • Asanas are best practiced 4 to 6 times per week, on an empty stomach early in the morning after emptying the bowels and taking a shower (Saucha).
  • Please shower before class. Wear clean clothes. Avoid wearing strong perfumes or deodorants. If practicing in the evening then any food intake is best done at least 2-3 hours before practice. Refrain from consuming water before and during practice. Water may be consumed 10-15 minutes after practice and food may be consumed 60 minutes later. These are general guidelines and one should find their own comfortable time to eat and drink after practice. In any case, it is best not to consume any food or drink immediately before or after practice.
  • Please bring a towel and a cotton mat in addition to the rubber yoga mat. The cotton mat helps during seated asanas by absorbing the sweat. A towel helps the teacher as well during adjustments. Wash your mats often.
    • Please respect the Yoga traditions and do not use clothes/mats that have sacred symbols such as or a Ψ (trident), or images of Indian deities, quotes from scriptures, distortions of Namaste, etc. as it is not appropriate to step on them during practice.
    • On a related note, if visiting India to learn Yoga or otherwise, please refrain from shooting yoga asana photos in temples, markets, slums, etc. and using Indians as props in your photos. For more information on this and other traditional aspects, please consult with your teacher.
  • Please inform the teacher if you have any injuries or other issues before starting practice and if you wish to be adjusted or not.
  • Please practice up to the asana that your teacher has recommended for you and do the finishing asanas. This is for your own safety to prevent injuries and also to not succumb to desires for more asanas.
  • It is recommended that ladies refrain from practicing the first 3 days of their menstrual cycle and take rest.
  • Traditionally, moon days (full moon and new moon) are also not recommended for practice as no study of the vedas or teaching is done on these days. One should devote these days to rest and meditate.
  • Please respect other students’ practice spaces by not walking over their mats and towels.
  • Ashtanga Yoga is best practiced along with Ayurveda to maintain a good diet according to one’s Ayurvedic constitution. A sattvic diet helps your practice and also keeps you healthy. Abhyanga (ayurvedic oil ‘massage’ treatment) also helps clear toxins from the body and clears the nadis ("energy" channels) and keeps joints healthy. Further reading is recommended to understand some basic Ayurveda and how it relates to yoga practice.

Moon Days

Ashtanga Yoga (or Vedas) is not taught or studied during full and new moon days. Please note that we follow the Indian calendar in which a day is from sunrise to the next sunrise. So in some cases, the moon days noted here will not align with what is reported in the Western calendar.
